“Amazon’s vision is to become Earth’s most customer-centric company. That means making their devices and services accessible to everyone — especially people with disabilities.”

Here are some of Amazon’s accessibility features for their various devices and digital services:

Clear and Consistent Layout: Amazon’s website tends to follow a consistent layout with a clear hierarchy of content. This helps users, including those using assistive technologies, understand the structure of the page.

Keyboard Navigation: The website is designed to be navigable using only a keyboard, which is crucial for users who cannot use a mouse due to mobility issues.

Focus Indicators: Interactive elements such as links, buttons, and form fields have clear focus indicators, making it easier for keyboard users to identify their current location on the page.

Alternative Text for Images: Images are accompanied by alternative text (alt text) that describes the content of the images. This ensures that users with visual impairments can understand the purpose of images.

Text Readability and Contrast: Amazon aims to maintain sufficient contrast between text and background colors, making text content readable for users with low vision or color blindness.

Semantic HTML: The use of semantic HTML elements provides a well-structured foundation for assistive technologies to interpret and convey content accurately.

Captions and Transcripts: Videos on Amazon often include closed captions or transcripts, benefiting users who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Responsive Design: Amazon’s website is designed to be responsive, adapting to different screen sizes and orientations. This benefits users who may use various devices to access the site.

Aria Roles and Landmarks: Amazon likely employs ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) roles and landmarks to enhance the accessibility of complex web elements, such as menus and interactive widgets.

Voice Search: The Voice Search option on the Amazon shopping app helps people with disabilities shop faster by allowing them to search for items using voice commands instead of typing.

Alexa: Amazon’s popular voice assistant, Alexa, offers a range of accessibility features for individuals with disabilities, including the ability to control devices with voice commands, read books, set reminders, and more.

VoiceView Screen Reader: Kindle e-readers and Fire TV sticks come equipped with a built-in screen reader called VoiceView that reads aloud menus, books, and other content, making it easier to navigate the device. (need to enable VoiceView Screen Reader from the settings).

Text-to-speech: Many of Amazon’s devices, including the Kindle and Fire tablets, come with text-to-speech technology that can read books, articles, and other written content aloud for individuals with visual impairments, dyslexia, or other learning disabilities.

Adjustable font sizes and background colors: Amazon’s Kindle e-readers allow users to adjust the font size and background color of their reading material, making it easier for people with visual impairments or dyslexia to read. You can increase the size of text on the app by going to the Accessibility section of your device settings.

Screen magnification — This feature in Fire tablet allows users to enlarge the screen up to 200% for easier viewing.

Closed captioning: Amazon Video, Prime Video, Amazon Music provide closed captioning options for their content, allowing users with hearing impairments to follow along with ease. If you’re watching product videos on the app, you can enable closed captions by tapping the CC icon.

Audio descriptions: Audio Descriptions are available for selected Prime Video titles and provide narration for compatible movies and TV shows. They describe actions, characters, scene changes, on-screen text, and other visual content.

In a world where technology has the potential to exclude, Amazon’s commitment to accessibility through its innovative products is a beacon of inclusion. By embracing diverse needs and ensuring usability for everyone, Amazon showcases how innovation can truly empower all individuals. Through their accessible designs and user-centric approach, Amazon not only offers products but also opens doors to a more inclusive future, where technology becomes a bridge that connects us all.
